Apple Valley is in northwestern Dakota County and was incorporated in 1969. There are six elementary, three middle and three high schools in the city, all operated by Independent School District 196. Apple Valley has an estimated population of over 50,000 and an approximate area of 17.56 square miles. Centered around the intersection of Cedar Avenue and County Road 42, Apple Valley is located about 20 minutes south of downtown Minneapolis or St. Paul and 15 minutes south of the Minneapolis/St. Paul airport or the Mall of America. Apple Valley is home to the Minnesota Zoo, a nationally-famous zoological garden that houses hundreds of animals from several distinct climatological zones.

Apple Valley's historical roots lead back to the mid-1800s when it was a farming community known as Lebanon Township. The first town meeting was held on May 11, 1858 in a home near the area that is now Westview Elementary School. Lebanon Township remained much the same for its first century, but in 1963, Orrin Thompson selected the name "Apple Valley" for several homes on either side of County Road 42.

Apple Valley boasts many notable residents, among them: Lindsey Vonn, Olympic skier; Karl Goehring, a goaltender for the Manitoba Moose and Dave Lee, a WCCO Radio show morning host.
