Seen as the sister city of Shakopee, Prior Lake was incorporated as a village in 1851. Prior Lake is one of the oldest southern metro cities and is twenty miles southwest of downtown Minneapolis in Scott County in Minnesota. Surrounding the shores of Lower and Upper Prior Lake, the city lies south of the Minnesota River and establishes the urban fringe of the south-southwest portion of the Minneapolis/St. Paul area and has a population of approximately 23,000. Prior Lake features many recreational amenities including more than 54 parks, over 100 miles of trails and sidewalks and 14 lakes.
The Prior Lake American is the main city newspaper, but the Savage Pacer is also common. The Prior Lake – Savage Area School District 719 serves Prior Lake, Savage and surrounding townships. Within the district, there are five elementary schools, one middle school and one high school.

Apple Valley's first town meeting was held on May 11, 1858 in a home near the area that is now Westview Elementary School.
The name "Burnsville" is attributed to an early Irish settler and land owner, William Byrne. His surname was recorded as "Burns" and was never corrected.
Farmington is home to three properties listed on the Register of Historic Places for Dakota County: the Daniel F. Akin House, the Church of the Advent and the Exchange Bank Building.
On the south metro fringe, Lakeville is one of the fastest growing cities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
Prior Lake features many recreational amenities including more than 54 parks, over 100 miles of trails and sidewalks and 14 lakes.
Four major highways link Rosemount to Minneapolis/St. Paul, and is home to the Pine Bend Refinery, which is the largest oil refinery in Minnesota and one of the largest in the United States.
Once a shipbuilding port for the U.S. Navy, Savage is now an industrial manufacturing job center in the southern metro.
Incorporated in 1857 as a booming river town, today Shakopee is the county seat of Scott County, and residents enjoy both the atmosphere of a small town and the resources of a metropolitan area.
